The WREX room

2006 Six Nations

by Mervyn Davies

It certainly is a mouth-watering prospect of Wales starting the defence of their Six Nations Championship with the visit to Twickenham on February 4th. If we are going to repeat the success of last season when it is straight into the Lions den with this game and only then will we know if we are moving in the right direction or if last season was a one off.  It certainly will be a clash of different styles, Englands juggernaut pack against the runners of Wales.

After Twickenham we will welcome the Scots to Cardiff for a Sunday Match and the WREX room will of Course be open to all to use. Scotland will hopefully be a proper challenge this time but one which I am confident we will overcome leading to a visit to Ireland and another tremendously difficult Challenge. I wonder if this will be a Triple Crown Game for Wales – Wouldn’t it be great.

The last two Games of the Tournament are at home with Italy and France playing Saturday games at Cardiff. The French game could be of vital importance but I am not going to speculate at this early stage – I’ll tell you more after Twickenham.

2005 was a great year for the Former Players Association. The WREX room was tremendously popular and it was good to see a number of New Zealand Ex-Internationals join us in WREX before and after the game.

Also earlier in the year we staged a ‘Classics’ Game versus England at the Brewery Field, and helped raise over £20,000 for the Tsunami Appeal. We also held our annual Honda Hall of Fame Dinner and inaugurated the Pontypool Front-Row into the Hall of Fame. We used the Dinner to help celebrate 100 years of Rugby Internationals between Wale and New Zealand with Colin Meads as our Chief Guest. This Dinner raised over £10,000 for our Former Players Charity and over £7,000 for the NSPCC.

In February 2006, we will stage another Hall of Fame Dinner where the London Welsh Stars will be honoured. This will be held at the Grosvenor Hotel, London on the eve of the Six Nations opener versus England at Twickenham. Please check our Website www.WREX.co.uk for full details If anyone is going to Twickenham then join us on Friday Night for a great start to a special weekend.

Finally, I look forward to seeing you all in the WREX room so please send in your ticket requests to James as early as possible and don’t forget – Friends cannot gain entry unless accompanied by an Ex- International
