Cliff Morgan CVO, OBE
1951-1958
Born Trebanog 7th April 1930
Outside half for Cardiff, Bective Rangers, Wales (29 matches), British Lions 1955 to South Africa (played in all four tests).
Cliff skippered Wales four times and played in Barbarian matches against South Africa 1952, New Zealand 1954 and Australia (captain) 1958.
He was in the Welsh Triple Crown and Championship-winning side of 1952 and was a key figure in the wins by Cardiff and Wales over New Zealand in 1953, having also played for Cardiff against South Africa in 1951 and in 1958 helped Cardiff defeat Australia.
He was a brilliant tourist with the Lions to South Africa, scoring a magnificent solo try in the First Test and skippering the tourists to a Third Test win in a shared series.
He received an OBE in 1977, CVO in 1986, Hon MA from the University of Wales in 1988 and Hon Doctorate from Kelle University in 1989 and was made a Hon Fellow of the Polytechnic of Wales in 1989.
Cliff joined the BBC in 1958 as Sports Organsier for Wales, later becoming editor of Sportsview and Grandstand, Editor of Sports Radio, Head of Outside Broadcasts for Radio and later TV.
Quite the most exciting player of his era, one of his knicknames was "The Rhondda Roundabout".
