No. 8's
Honda Hall of Fame 2003
The second Honda Hall of Fame dinner took place on November 27th 2003 at the CIA, Cardiff. The event took place in conjunction with the Wooden Spoon Society.
As well as inducting into the Honda Hall of Fame four of the greatest No. 8’s to wear the Welsh Jersey, the event also played homage to the 1978 Triple Triple crown winning team.
The 1978 Phil Bennet led Triple Triple Crown winning team, was considered by many to be the greatest team that ever played together, as they brushed all aside in a dominance of Northern Hemisphere rugby.
The audience were shown some of the greatest moments of that team, and shared in some of the memories as several of the team were interviewed by the hosts Phil Steele and Angharad Mair.
All members of that team were present to also pay homage to another milestone – the 50 year anniversary of the last Welsh win over the All Blacks in 1953 – Dr Jack Mathews and Bleddyn Williams were present to recall their thoughts on that famous victory.
Bleddyn and Jack then watched on as they saluted their former captain John Gwilliam, who along with Mervyn Davies, Alun Pask and Scott Quinnell where inaugurated into the Honda Hall of Fame.
Each gave an insight into their own rugby days, as well as opinions on the modern game and advice for the current set of Welsh Internationals.
They then all enjoyed the entertainment, which was provided by Peter Karrie, who performed with the Dowlais Male voice Choir and the Cantorian Cyfartha Ladies choir. They were also joined on stage by the World Cheerleading Champions Jo’s Heatwave!!
All money raised on the night was split between the Wooden Spoon Society and the WREX charity the Welsh Rugby International Players Benevolent Association.
